Match Report: Gwent Bounce Back in Style with Commanding Win Over Cornwall
Sunday, Llanwern Golf Club

In the unforgiving heat at Llanwern, Gwent produced a composed and clinical response to their recent disappointment against Glamorgan, dispatching Cornwall with a 9.5–5.5 victory that never felt in serious doubt.

The morning foursomes offered an early indicator of Gwent’s intent. Leading from the front, Callam Morris and Greg Baker once again proved a formidable partnership, delivering a commanding win that set the tone. While the second match saw Rhys Pescod and Greg Harris succumb to a well-drilled Cornish pair, the middle of the order dug in with characteristic resolve. Rob Smith and Rhys Barber battled to a gritty half, as did the Parc duo of Scott Palmer and debutant Callum Hook, whose deft touch around the 18th green rescued a deserved share of the spoils.

In the anchor match, debutant David Price combined impressively with captain Daniel King, edging out a narrow win that gave Gwent a slender but significant 3–2 advantage at the break.

The afternoon singles saw Gwent accelerate. The top order delivered a flurry of early blows, securing 3.5 points from the opening four matches. Pescod, looking to make amends for his morning defeat, held his nerve for a hard-fought half. Hook, capping off a highly promising debut, strolled to a 4&3 win, while Morris and Price both made light work of their opponents to maintain their unbeaten records.

Cornwall mounted a late resurgence, with narrow 18th-hole defeats for Baker, Barber, and Harris offering a reminder of the contest’s competitive edge. But Rob Smith's dominant win ensured Gwent edged within sight of the finishing line.

The decisive moment came via the ever-reliable Scott Palmer, whose win confirmed overall victory. And fittingly, it was left to captain Daniel King to put the exclamation mark on a fine day for the hosts, sealing a 2-up win in the anchor match and underlining the authority of the team’s performance.

A huge thank you must go to our 2024 County Champion Logan Wesltey, who—despite only just returning from some well-earned annual leave—was out on the course supporting the team with food, drink, and encouragement that proved invaluable in the searing heat. His contribution off the course was every bit as important as those made on it.

Gratitude also goes to our gracious hosts at Llanwern Golf Club, who once again offered a warm welcome and impeccable hospitality. As ever, the venue continues to prove a happy hunting ground for the county side, with an atmosphere that breeds confidence and camaraderie in equal measure.

After the setback in May, this was a composed and encouraging statement from a Gwent side with plenty to be optimistic about. Attention now turns to the next challenge—an away trip to Dorset on August 3rd—with momentum restored and confidence renewed.
